Artist Bio

Keenan Derby (b. 1987, Atlanta) is a painter based in Los Angeles, California. His work begins with observations of the forests, deserts, chaparral, mountains, and open water of Southern California. Working between observation, memory, and imagination, Derby transforms these encounters into constructed landscapes where familiar forms become fluid and uncertain.

Through layered oil paint and shifting light, his paintings explore the space between the physical landscape and the landscapes held in memory.

Derby holds a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA from Boston University. He has exhibited at galleries including Craig Krull Gallery, Santa Monica; The Hole, Los Angeles; Abigail Ogilvy Gallery, Boston; Gallery Also, Los Angeles; SAP Space, Berlin; and Last Projects, Los Angeles, among others.
